Let’s Talk Research

A randomized, controlled clinical trial on colic in Denmark that compared chiropractic adjustments

to daily doses of dimethicone has concluded: "Spinal manipulation has a positive short-term effect

on infantile colic."

The Chiropractic profession has accumulated many scientific studies to differentiate approaches and validate treatment protocols. Outcome assessments further reinforce benefits in terms of clinical success and associated costs of treatment. Frequently these studies were performed not only by chiropractors, but also medical doctors performing independent and government research in the United States and other countries.
Paul G. Shekelle, M.D., M.P.H., of the Rand Corporation commented on the ABC television special 20/20; “ There are considerably more randomized controlled trials which show benefit of chiropractic care than there are for many, many other things which physicians and neurosurgeons do all the time.”

Harris Poll

The Harris Poll was completed in 1994 and consisted of rating patient satisfaction interactions of various health care practitioners. Ultimately, the results speak for themselves. Patients rated chiropractic interactions and care as, very satisfied.
In fact, patients were more satisfied with chiropractic care than care from all other health care practitioners being evaluated. This included their medical doctor, physical therapist, and doctors of osteopathy.
In an article noted, Patient Evaluations of Care from Family Physicians and Chiropractors in the, “Western Journal of Medicine” – 1989:150:351-355, patients under chiropractic care had patient satisfaction ratings 3 times higher than those patients under their family physicians care.

New Zealand Commission Report
The New Zealand Commission Report was a 377 page published report completed by the government of New Zealand. It encapsulated efficacy and safety of chiropractic care. Overall, it is estimated that this report is the culmination of 2 years of research from hearings with health care experts.
The report concluded that chiropractors are the only health care practitioners who are necessarily equipped by their education and training to carry out spinal manual therapy (spinal adjustments). It further clarifies that chiropractors are able to carry out spinal diagnosis and therapy at a sophisticated and refined level, and such therapy performed by a licensed chiropractor is safe.
Ultimately, it is stated by the government of New Zealand, “The duration and training of a registered chiropractor are sufficient to enable him or her to determine whether there are contraindications to spinal manual therapy in a particular case, and whether that patient should have medical care instead of, or as well as, chiropractic care.”
This report underwent critical hearings and extensive analysis and research by the Commission in New Zealand, United States, Canada, England, and Australia.
Here is a final quote, “By the end of the inquiry we found ourselves irresistibly and with complete unanimity drawn to the conclusion that modern chiropractic is a soundly based and valuable branch of the health care in a specialized area.”

Agency on Health Care Policy and Research Study

The Agency on Health Care Policy and Research Study released, Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of acute low back pain. The AHCPR is part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, and released these guidelines on December 8, 1994.
Such guidelines were the result of widespread diagnostic and treatment methods for acute low back pain. The 23 health care panel included medical doctors, chiropractors, nurses, experts in spinal research, physical therapists, an occupational therapist, psychologist and a consumer representative. Their objective was to provide recommendation strategies for assessment and treatment of acute low back problems.
They concluded that conservative treatment such as spinal adjustments should be pursued in most cases before considering surgical intervention.

Annals of Internal Medicine Study

The Annals of Internal Medicine Study reviewed and published an article titled; Spinal Manipulation for Low Back Pain., Shekelle, P. 1992:117:590-598. This journal highlighted spinal manipulation clearly helps patients with uncomplicated, acute low back pain. The Annals of Internal Medicine is the third most widely read medical journal.

 Gallup Study

The Gallup Study done by the Gallup organization in 1991 investigated attitudes, opinions and behaviors of users and nonusers of chiropractic on a national study level. They reported 90% felt chiropractic health care was effective.
“Chiropractic manipulation is safer than medical management of low back pain. Chiropractic management is greatly superior to medical management in terms of scientific validity, safety, cost-effectiveness and patient satisfaction.”

Sweden Study

The Sweden Report was conducted in 1987 by a commission on Alternative Medicine. The report was evaluated by university medical faculty and highlighted that Doctors of chiropractic had university level training found to be equivalent to Swedish medical training. They noted chiropractors to be capable and competent in differential diagnosis and suggested they should be regulated on a primary care basis.
They believed it was imperative and vital to improve cooperation between chiropractors, registered medical practitioners, and physiotherapists.

Chiropractic wellness care is based upon the scientifically proven hypothesis that proper structure of the spine is essential and required for proper function of the nervous system as it relates to control and regulation of global physiology and health.
